GIRL SCOUT WEEK CELEBRATION

We celebrate Girl Scout Week every year to highlight the heroic deeds of our Founder, Josefa Llanes Escoda, who is an inspiration to all Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts all over the country are enjoined to participate in the week-long celebration from September 20 to 26, 2009 with the theme girls worldwide say, “together we can change our world”, which was adopted from the WAGGGS Global Action Theme (GAT) for triennium 2009-2011. The focus is on the United Nation’s Eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The following are sub-themes and basis for activities to create greater participation among our girls during this week-long celebration.

• September 20 – “Touching Lives”
Honoring GSP Founder Josefa Llanes Escoda & Chief Girl Scout Corazon Cojuangco Aquino
• September 21 – “Honoring the Troop Leaders”
• September 22 – “Discovering Potential”
• September 23 – “Saving our Planet”
• September 24 – “Keeping Fit”
• September 25 – “Promoting the Filipino Culture”
• September 26 – "Creating Peace through Partnerships"

The suggested activities from the GAT Badge Curriculum Activity pack (NHQ Circular No. 17 series 2009) are some of the activities which the girls can undertake during the celebration. However, Councils are encouraged to plan more exciting activities in line with the given sub-themes.

The GSP National Headquarters will hold an activity on Sunday, 20 September 2009 in Intramuros, Manila. This is dedicated to the two Girl Scout heroines -- Josefa Llanes Escoda, the GSP Founder and Corazon Cojuangco Aquino, the Chief Girl Scout in 1986-1992. The main activity for the day is the seven o’clock morning Mass at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros. Two thousand Girl Scouts from Northern, Central and Southern Luzon are expected to participate in the activity.

Happy Girl Scout Week!

A DAY WITH GIRL SCOUTS WITH DISABILITIES

The Girl Scouts of the Philippines celebrated the “A Day with Girl Scouts with Disabilities” in line with the commemoration of the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week. The event was held 23 July 2009 at the SM Storyland, SM Southmall, Las Piñas City. Two hundred forty Girl Scouts from 15 councils came and enjoyed the activities together with their troop leaders and members of GSP Headquarters staff. Gespie, the Girl Scout mascot, and the mascots of the Storyland joined the fun.

One of the aims of the annual event is to raise public awareness of disability issues and concerns and to encourage everyone to be responsible for the upliftment of social conditions of young Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in order for them to take pro-active roles in nation-building.

Simultaneous Handwashing

A Handwashing activity was held simultaneously on June 24, 2009 at all the 33 SM Supermalls nationwide. The event was held in partnership with the Department of Health, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Sustainable Development Solutions for Asia and the Pacific, as well as local government units and schools.

In SM City in Cebu, 365 miles south of Manila, and in nearby Bacolod City, students from various schools, together with representatives from the Department of Health and Education, and with the assistance of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, took part in the handwashing activity.

Part of the program was a film showing of the Proper Way of Handwashing. There were also other ways of helping prevent the spread of A(H1N1) which the simultaneous event highlighted such as increased frequency in disinfecting the malls’ comfort rooms and commonly contacted surfaces, provision of sufficient and accessible infection control supplies, organization of pandemic awareness teams, seminars, and emergency communication plan.

Considering that an average of 2.8 million shoppers come to SM and its branches everyday, aside from its 12,000 tenants and 25,000 employees, it can serve as a potent gateway of information in the drive against the further spread of the dreaded influenza A(H1N1) virus. Also, with the support of concerned citizens like the Girl Scouts, the campaign against the disease may help to conquer the quick increase of the pandemic.

GIRL SCOUTS PROMOTE HANDWASHING FOR HEALTH

The Girl Scouts of the Philippines participated in the Global Handwashing Day which was launched at the SM Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City, adjacent to Manila, on April 22, 2009, coinciding with Earth Day.

Global Handwashing Day is a result of the International Year of Sanitation initiated by the United Nations Secretary-General Advisory Board chaired by Prince Willem-Alexander of Netherlands.

At the Mall of Asia, Girl Scouts joined prominent personalities from various sectors to demonstrate proper handwashing procedure to inform and educate shoppers about preventive measures to hinder the spreading of the A(H1N1) virus and other transient organisms.

Among the speakers during the launch was Girl Scout National president Teresita Choa who, like the other speakers, emphasized that the simple act of handwashing with soap must be done in order to help prevent the circulation of dreadful diseases, and developing this habit must be communicated to the society at large.
